Product Description

There is a general buzz in the guitar world, that Martins from the early 1920s and earlier are "made for nylon" and thus to be avoided. A half century of playing and messing around with these extra special guitars has shown that it's just not true. And researches of Martin's records have uncovered the fact that for many years Martin was refering only to the setup, not the actual construction. With proper steel string setup, meaning low action and level frets, these can make some of the most beautiful sounding steel-string guitars ever. They aren't modern instruments in the sense that you can put on medium guage strings and play loud bluegrass, but their tone is rich, deep and full with exceptional sweetness in the treble. Using .010 or .011 guage sets will draw the full sound - the lightness of construction allows this, and heavier strings might overpower the light body. And these small bodies have their own richness and fullness, whereas heavier modern guitars had to be made larger to compensate for the heavier tops and backs. I believe that the pearl bordered guitars can have special qualities of sound, although it's impossible to know why. They often have better shaped necks as well.

This 0-42 fits right in, with extra fine tone and great neck shape. The bridge is solid Ivory - it was an option back in those days, and all the bindings are ivory, back and sides are incredible Brazilian rosewood, top is most likely Adirondack, tho there is a theory that the tops of the pearl guitars were sometimes out of German spruce. This guitar has several glued and cleated cracks and a new proper sized bridge plate, all professional grade repairs, and there is water damage to the top finish at the bottom edge, visible in the photos. The action is 3/32" 12th fret high E string, so a neck reset is necessary for proper setup.
