Product Description
Chris Berkov has been the Bay Area's pre-eminent guitar repair person for decades, now retired. He was quiet about it, not interested in self promotion like so many of the better known people in the trade. He is also an accomplished flamenco guitarist and builder of Flamenco and Classical guitars.
Here we have a rare example of his fine but unheralded (I told you he was never into publicizing his art) luthierie, a Flamenco Negra, which means the back and sides are rosewood instead of the more standard cypress. The rosewood brings a fuller, richer tone, whereas cypress emphasizes the brilliance and percussiveness that we associate with Flamenco guitar. The Negra is a guitar that can be used for other styles as well. This guitar's rosewood is the Brazilian species that is so highly regarded and which in a certain clarity and treble as well. The top is redwood, a lesser used topwood that looks like cedar but is more like spruce and is equal in its tonal qualities.
